My art is rooted in curiosity about the natural world — what moves beneath the surface, what patterns repeat, what a leaf holds that the eye almost misses. Working in abstract botanical painting, I explore how colour, movement and layered form transform natural elements into expressive works. Each painting develops through layers of oil on canvas, as botanical forms and organic patterns gradually emerge within the composition.
My artistic journey began in 1982, when I moved from Iceland to California with my husband and young son. There I began studying art more seriously, taking evening classes at the Art Center in Pasadena before continuing at Otis/Parsons College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. After returning to Iceland and raising my family, I completed my MFA and have since worked as an artist. My work has been exhibited internationally, including in the United States, Germany, Spain, France and Iceland.
One of my earliest childhood memories is trying to “interrogate” leaves using shoe polish — I was convinced they held secret information I needed to uncover. My methods have changed, but that curiosity has never left me, and it still shapes my art today. Over the years, my connection with nature has deepened through yoga, meditation and other contemplative practices, which let me observe the natural world with greater sensitivity. It is often there — in stillness — that the colours, forms and rhythms of my paintings first begin to take shape.
